Why machine learning matters to B2B companies

While the number of B2C companies using machine learning is skyrocketing, the adoption of machine learning by B2B companies lags far behind in comparison. This post highlights two ways machine…

A Day as a DevSecOps

A day in the life of DevSecOps begins with text and ends with text, or so they say. I prefer to think that a day of anyone at 3YOURMIND starts with coffee and ends with coffee, Club Mate, or tea. In Georg’s case — a DevSecOps at 3YOURMIND Berlin — a day at the office begins between 9 & 10:30am most of the time, with a quick black coffee (no sugar) and some chats in the corridors, from which he covertly pulls some information that might help him prioritize the requests he receives from other developers.

He always has a good story to tell and a good idea to share with his colleague Mattu, who sits at a high desk opposite to him. They share a lot of ideas and perspectives about work and help each other implementing these ideas. I personally believe that my job looks a little bit like this as well: text, coffee, chats and a lot of exchanges with my peers, so sometimes I wonder if I am becoming a DevSecOp as well.

But our responsibilities are clearly different. Going back to Georg for example, he is in charge of maintaining the pipelines of the company’s buildserver and adapting the infrastructure towards using docker; he takes care of created servers and unification of the build & deployment methods; he also organizes workshops for employees at the 3YOURMIND facilities and tutors us on different IT tech topics.

“What I like about my job at 3YOURMIND is that I have a good frame for implementing new technologies; I receive immediate feedback on what I do, which helps me improve, and I see the impact of my job in real time; that is something that motivates me a lot. I’m also proud of being part of a team working on the development of an innovative solution — I like being part of something different and new.” Georg vom Endt, DevSecOps, 3YOURMIND Berlin.

Things being automated are a big part of his daily challenges — he works really creatively and is pro-problem solving to “get things done” for them as automatically as possible. That is to say, they tell a machine once to do a very laborious task for them, and if they get to forget about it for a while, it’s because it worked.

He recently implemented some ideas on how to raise awareness on topics that are critical for the company’s performance; his input has generated an impact on some of the company’s internal processes and our product in general.

You see him walking around quite proudly (in a devs way) when he achieves his goals or if he achieved his biggest challenge of the day without breaking any machines, and you’ll see him asking colleagues for a quick chat if he is still trying to figure things out.

But like every dev knows, breaking machines is part of the job — they simply fix them back again. Maybe that’s why it kinda looks like they do a lot of fixing jobs most of the time, when what they actually do is take their chances to actually improve the way things work, thereby reducing the overall amount of work to the absolute least required.

What Don’t You Like Doing, Georg?

“Family visits for fixing their internet and non-working devices, or giving IT tech support for installing printer drivers!” Georg says with a crazed glitch in his eye. Regardless of what other people may think though, a day of work as a DevSecOps is never boring, especially if you are generating an impact.

“It means the world to us to find answers buried deep in some log file; it’s actually like finding the Lost Ark sometimes. When we occasionally are doing something wrong, then most likely we `fat-fingered` it. Which is a friendly way to say that somebody screwed up a command that can break a complete system infrastructure, that we will have to fix again because… well… that’s our job….” Georg Vom Endt, DevSecOps, 3YOURMIND Berlin.
