Journalism Needs Social Media

It is incredibly simple to open a social network application and peruse the endless content available. It is equally as simple to open a phone’s internet browser or News application and view content that way. In 2021, it is not difficult to imagine which option the average person with social media accounts would likely choose. This media curation will explore the distribution of news content via social media and how while various news outlets’ viewership is threatened by the ease at which social networks are able to distribute the news, they are also increasingly reliant on those same platforms in order to maintain relevance.

As mentioned in the Forbes article below, there is statistical basis that demonstrates the increasingly large distance being placed between individuals and traditional news sources. Social media is quickly becoming the average consumer’s source of news.

For example, if one were to be curious about any pressing matters regarding world news, they could simply open Twitter and see what is at the top of the trending list. Today, not only are viewers able to view the UN Assembly in New York City, but they could also learn about current updates on the Coronavirus pandemic in their state, all without visiting a single news outlet site or turning on the television.

At the same time, most news outlets rely a great deal on social media, like the New York Times catering to the high engagement that comes with bright, colorful, monochromatic themes on Instagram, or The Washington Post utilizing endearing infographics that are relevant and Instagram story-worthy should individuals wish to share them.

Even those who may not care about world news or the latest changes in the political climate and simply wish to find out more information about their favorite sports teams can simply visit Twitter and click the section that provides the latest sports news updates.

Overall, it is incredibly easy to forget the impact that social media has on every single aspect of peoples’ lives. This includes our culture, the ways in which we speak and act, the stances that we take on current issues, and even the ways in which we consume the news. Due to the overwhelming influence of social media, news outlets have had to keep up and have clearly made strides to do so. It begs the question: would traditional news outlets survive without adapting to the era of social media?
