The American Dream

The American dream is believed by most to be the idea that hard work and determination will make you successful. Similarly, in my eyes the American dream is the desire to reach a set goal, no matter how hard to journey. The goals or success people want gain have a wide range. These could include becoming famous, wealthy, and well known. In other cases some peoples dreams could be to make it through another day or to have freedom from their demons.

One person who embodies the American dream is Bruno Mars. In todays world he is a well known Grammy Award winning artist, but that was not always the case for him. Although he claims his childhood had wonderful memories, his family lived in poverty. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii with his other 5 siblings. His family did not grow up with luxuries, they lived in a one room house and did not always have electricity or a bathroom. When interviewed about his childhood he believes that his parents gave him everything he needed but does state that his family had some struggles. “Though he does admit, “Where we were staying at first didn’t have a bathroom, so we’d have to walk across the park to this other spot that had a bathroom.” (Ungerman).

A song that connects to my understanding of the American Dream is “Billionaire” by Bruno Mars. The reason I think this is because as mentioned above he has come from rags to riches. Also the songs title gives away the song slightly. The song is about how Bruno Mars wants to become rich and famous. Not only does he want to become rich but the song entitles what he would do with all the money he makes.

“And not a single tummy around me would know what hungry was
Eating good sleeping soundly
I know we all have a similar dream
Go in your pocket pull out your wallet
And put it in the air and sing” (Mars)

The part of his song stated above explains that he would not just use the money on himself but give it to the world or people who need it. This brings out his selfless personality.
