The Immoral Abyss in the Pacific

One small island in the Pacific Ocean has gone off the deep end.

Imagine waking up to a bright, sunny day in your hometown. The birds are chirping. The sun is shining. It’s a picturesque day, to say the least. You walk out your front door and gaze over the beautiful place you call home. But even in all its natural glory, you can’t ignore the fact that the duly-elected mayor of your hometown is a convicted child rapist.

At this point, you’re probably wondering… how is all of this allowed to happen? That’s a question that only Pitcairn’s administrators in Auckland can answer. In fact, Pitcairn is technically a British overseas dependency, so that may be a question for the folks in London instead.

But no matter what any politician says, the cold truth remains. Pitcairn is an isolated, barely accessible speck in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean; one of the leftover scraps from British imperialism. It’s so remote — so cut off — that stories like this can fly under the political radar, even with a noticeable amount of media coverage.

And unless overseas lawmakers in New Zealand and Britain take a stand against this abominable situation, things are unlikely to change any time soon.
