USC Football 2017 Season Preview

Apr 10, 2017

USC football is back and better than ever living up to their extensive winning record as one of USC’s most historic teams.

Expectations are high for the Trojans after achieving an exhilarating 52–49 win against Penn State in the 2017 Rose Bowl Game. It then begs the question…will they live up to the hype this upcoming season?

Alabama absolutely dominated the Trojans in their season opener winning 52–6. Despite this loss, USC’s coach, Clay Helton, righted the ship and got the team back on track.

Some leaders arose this season and a secret weapon was revealed. That secret weapon can be summed up in two words: Sam Darnold.

Heisman Trophy candidate Sam Darnold secured his role as USC’s quarterback and proved to be on-the-money when it counted. There is no doubt that Darnold is a competitor. With his drive, USC can definitely contend for a national championship. He’s been unstoppable so far, but the September schedule will definitely be a challenge.

Expectations are high for both him and the team as a whole for next season. The Trojans have already been pre-maturely ranked number 2 going into next year.

The spring game will be taking place April 15th and it will be a chance for the Trojans to come out hot. Rust may be a factor, but it will be a nice test to get these guys back in the mentality of competition.

The returning players are bringing a strong presence to the field, but USC also scored in their recruiting class. With the absence of JuJu, an exciting duo that will be making their debut next year are receiver Joseph Lewis and running back Stephen Carr, which will bring some heat to USC’s offense.

USC lost its top two receivers which leaves Deontay Burnett as the top returning receiver on the roster. You also can’t forget about tackles Zach Banner and Chad Wheeler. They’ve left as well so adjustments will have to be made to build around Darnold for this upcoming season.

Overall, the Trojans have a shot at the title with extreme talent on both sides of the ball. It’ll be a true test as to how they fair against their 12 straight games this upcoming fall.
