‘As I build books, God builds people,’ the $10-million-a-year writer tells Wired

Brandon Sanderson is the Colleen Hoover of epic fantasy. Both authors, in their 40s, have armies of fans who have shown extraordinary loyalty to them: Sanderson’s by pledging $42 million to him on Kickstarter and Hoover’s by posting weepy, viral TikTok videos about her.

But their differences go beyond his love of magic and her instinct for what’s been called romantic “trauma porn.” Hoover’s novels are so steamy that sex scenes occur on 70% of the pages in one of them, a critic has estimated.

Sanderson, a Mormon, makes about $10 million a year by writing about characters who have their minds on other things.

Jason Kehe writes in a profile of the author in the March 23 Wired, “No one has sex. They only save lives.”

Sanderson told him, “As I build books, God builds people.”

Kehe also called him “a bad writer,” and his story has sparked the inevitable outcry that erupts online whenever fans believe someone has shown too little reverence for a favorite author.

But Kehe had an access rarely granted by authors in an age when stars wield tight control over their images. He stayed at Sanderson’s compound in a gated community in Utah, ate Chinese with him, and went to a convention of fans, some of whom named children after his characters.
