A Tale Of Two Festivals

How two major U.K. festivals differed over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Bank Holiday weekend in the UK is a time for music festivals of differing sizes offering various types of music, some are very small, and some are very large. I went to a large one with a great variety of acts.

The first music festival I attended was at Reading in 1973; there were 70,000 people at the event, watching two stages. That has changed immensely over the years, with many acts performing over multiple stages.

I’ve been going to the Victorious Festival in Portsmouth for some years. In the 11 years since its inception, it has grown to 65,000 people. As usual, it was a family affair with a great atmosphere; there was music for all tastes around the site with over ten stages.

I haven’t attended the Reading Festival for about 15 years, but the difference in atmosphere between the two was noticeable. I’m a lot older now; you can’t go to festivals for nearly 50 years without aging a little, so that may have something to do with my different perspective.

But if a music festival ends with violence and destruction of property, then something is drastically wrong and needs to be questioned.

Music fans attending these types of events must be made to feel safe; this is not the first time these scenes have erupted at Reading Festival.

Once again, it is the minority spoiling it for the majority. I feel confident that most of the attendees behaved themselves and enjoyed the event. It is unacceptable that campers were told not to go to sleep and stay alert because of the dangers caused by people lighting fires and burning tents.

What I did witness over the weekend in Portsmouth was a festival where the audience was well behaved, and young children could play freely in the arena where they were safe. There was a…
