How a Backflip Can Build Confidence

A while back, after years of not performing a single backflip, I went to a trampoline park and discovered that I had developed a fear of doing it again.

While I was able to do it in the safety of a foam-cube pool, I struggled with the fear of the trampoline.

I jumped up and down, waiting to perform one, but I never mustered the courage. The moment it felt right, I would tighten up and fail the attempt.

I continued this way until there were two minutes left of the session I paid for.

Now, however, I made a promise to myself. I promised myself to jump in 1…2…3, and I did; I performed my first backflip in years.

The reason I did it (besides making the session worth the money), was so that I could build trust and confidence in myself.

I knew the ugly consequences of not keeping my own promise.

This is what I knew:

While you might think it doesn’t matter that much, it does. If you start to become distrusting of yourself, as a consequence of breaking your own promises, then whom can you trust if you can’t even trust yourself?

You probably wouldn’t take lightly on breaking the promises to others, so why would you treat yourself any differently?
