Why Playing It Safe Is Killing Your Creativity

Writing for money vs. writing for passion

When you read about all the famous writers out there today, they all have one thing in common: They all have an original idea that led them to success.

When they wrote, many people have an idea in mind: to make money with their writing. That is why they do things that worked for others because they believe they will have the same results.

When they make a few pennies on it, they get used to that amount and keep writing what they think will make them the same amount of money every month.

But even if the idea of playing safe will help you earn a few pennies, it will not be what will lead you to success. Playing it safe is killing your creativity. You stop being original and producing something new that may impact others because it is easier to earn little from popular topics.

Think of your favorite author. You like him for a specific reason. You prefer to read it than others because he has already created a brand, and he is probably the first one you have read who writes that way. Although there are already others who write about that topic, he is the one you like.

This happens because he did something that no one had done until then. He marked the beginning of a style that even if others copy him, he will be the best because it was his idea.

You are not going to change other's minds by writing the same thing you see everywhere. You will only ride the wave of validation. When you write the same thing that everybody reads every day, you will be just another writer. But when you forget about money, you get out of the comfort zone of write what it’s popular to change what others are used to read.
