Hope is DEAD

But there is HOPE

It is often my intent to fill the companion Facebook page for this publication with stories which reflect the more positive side of our community; our personal accomplishments, legal triumphs, and shifts in societal thinking. Unfortunately to get to the good news, you have to weed through a lot of the bad. Those bad stories were once so toxic to me that I had both my wife and my therapist telling me to step away from all Transgender feeds. I still see the negative headlines, but nowadays they sit in my peripheral because I refuse to let that deter me from the positive aspects of my personal transition and how the world views the Transgender community.

Today I saw a story that I could not allow to exist in my peripheral. A story that brings me to tears, not just from sadness and loss, but seething anger. This story needs to be rallying cry for our community; a call to bring about massive change in how we value our own lives. We must make it clear that we are not disposable, and we refuse to be devalued to the point of self-annihilation.

Reading Hope’s story, I literally go cold. There is never a good reason for a person to end their life; keep in mind that I say that from the perspective of someone who has attempted to end their life. For such a young girl, with her whole life ahead of her, and having a supportive family, there is no excuse for her to jump to her death.

Instinctively I want to say that society failed her. I have NO doubts that she saw all those negative Transgender feeds and they broke her down…
